QR codes displayed on a screen can be very difficult to use for persons with a disability. Consider, for example, if the QR code, due to scrolling or resizing, happens to be positioned entirely or partially outside of the “viewport” (currently visible area of application). This is difficult to notice for users with limited vision, and it can effectively make it impossible to scan the code. For others, the problem is related with the lack of time, or with difficult to understand instructions.
The dominant system for electronic identification in Sweden – BankID – has acknowledged the challenges involved with QR codes, and developed a QR code implementation optimized for accessibility. Among other things, there’s a sticky and full screen layout that will ensure the code is never cropped or scrolled out of the window.
