The project is a comprehensive refurbishment of a public-use building that is historically protected, the Centre for Education "Slava Raškaj" in Zagreb, Vladimira Nazora Street.

The Centre has already more than 135 years of experience in rehabilitation and education of students with hearing and speech disabilities and children and young people with communication difficulties. Regarding the needs of these students, the accessibility of the premises is essential. During the design the architectural studio co-operated fully with the client that has a long and comprehensive experience and precisely defined the requirements and equipment needed.

The project involved the renovation of 31 accessible infrastructure units with classrooms for part-time, non-institutional psychosocial rehabilitation, accessible hallways and toilet, as well as other accessible elements.

As a significant part of the project, a once neglected small park was renovated and transformed into the Sensory Park that is a part of the rehabilitation. An accessible outdoor ramp connects the classrooms level with the top of the hill of the Sensory Park. The synthesis of the nature, urban equipment, colours, smells and tactile senses adds a new level to the well-being of the users.

The project combines accessibility improvements and energy-saving measures, clearly showing that both sets of requirements can be satisfied by involving users of the building and technicians, following relevant standards in each domain. Furthermore, the centre is in a historical building meaning any renovation must follow specific rules for preservation. The project was very demanding, complex, challenging in many ways, but also very interesting, beautiful and rewarding for the users and also for the design team.
