This guide explains the importance of including autistic individuals with complex support needs throughout the research process.

Following this line of reasoning, it provides recommendations for researchers on how to include autistic individuals with complex support needs in their studies.

Only through this approach can the studies be designed that are more closely aligned with the needs and preferences of the autistic community members and, therefore, that address current and future social challenges.

Specifically, regarding research methods and techniques, the practical recommendations list some measures that can facilitate access to research for people with autism and high support needs, which could also be useful for the entire group, such as: co-designing the questions and response options with the participants, introducing visual examples or explaining concepts in clear language, for quantitative methods; and adapting the timing and number of questions, inviting a reference person, and verifying body language, for qualitative methods.
