Description

Digital accessibility is essential for an inclusive digital society and a future-proof economy. Yet, accessibility of digital products and services still lag behind in many sectors. This position paper from the Taskforce for Diversity & Inclusion, an initiative of NLdigital and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) in the Netherlands, presents a clear stance: accessibility must shift from being an “extra” feature to being a standard in technology development. This position paper give some advice on how to do that in your daily practice.

Digital accessibility will soon no longer be optional but mandatory. With the introduction of the European Accessibility Act (EAA), companies will be required to make digital products and services accessible to people with disabilities starting from June 2025. This calls for a structural approach within the tech sector. With contributions from AFAS and MKB Toegankelijk, this paper outlines a path toward structural digital accessibility, focusing on:

  • Obligation and awareness: Regulations and standards should encourage companies to integrate accessibility.
  • Development from the ground up: Accessibility must be a core component of design and development processes.
  • Inclusive innovation: By involving end-users from diverse backgrounds, technology can be created that works for everyone.

The position paper includes contributions from Babette Pouwels, Hanneke van Dorst, and practical examples from Kyndryl and Capgemini to help you getting started.
