Description
Increasing digitization and mechanization processes are now omnipresent in almost all areas of life. This also applies to the use of technologies to support independent living for people with disabilities.
This article provides an overview of the potential and challenges associated with the use of technical systems as an extension of the support arrangement. Key and participation-promoting uses for supporting technologies include: the areas of building environment and building automation, health promotion, daily structuring and organization of free time, mobility, shaping social relationships and participation planning/management.
However, the successful development and application of innovative assistive technologies is significantly influenced by technical, usage-related and ethical challenges.
A lack of interfaces between specialised software and other digital tools makes it difficult to plan participation and support across service providers. In addition, the acceptance of technology by users - be they people with disabilities or their caregivers and support people - in conjunction with the accessibility of the technology is crucial for successful use.
The technologies need to be as flexible as possible and the users need to be introduced to them in a way that meets their needs. As part of the development, it is important to involve the users themselves in the spirit of participatory technology design.
