AccessibleEU Austria - Introducing the Day of Transport Culture in Austria. Learning from the Hungarian Experience (26-AW-AT-01)

Building on the successful Hungarian initiative “A Közlekedési Kultúra Napja”, this AccessibleEU event aims to introduce the concept of a “Day of Transport Culture” to Austria and to lay the foundation for a long-term national awareness campaign.

  • Info days

Austria and Hungary share similar mobility challenges: increasing traffic density, mixed use of public space, growing cycling and micromobility, and the need for respectful interaction among all road users.

This event co-organised by AccessibleEU, the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, the Austrian Society for Transport Science and the Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen Österreichs (HGBS), aims to foster an inclusive, respectful, and sustainable approach to mobility—bridging road traffic, public transport, cycling, and walking. As well as to raise awareness and expand the concept of traffic culture to include accessibility, universal design, and equal participation for all—especially persons with disabilities, older persons, and other groups with specific mobility needs. It marks the beginning of a cross-border learning process for safer, more empathetic, and people-centred mobility systems.

The event seeks to enable knowledge transfer from Hungarian organisers to Austrian stakeholders. By presenting proven approaches, organizational structures, communication strategies, and lessons learned, the Hungarian partners will support Austria in adapting the concept to its own cultural, institutional, and legal context.

Programme highlights:

  • Keynotes & impulse talks by Hungarian organisers and European experts on mobility culture and accessibility.
  • Best practices: school-based awareness programmes, citizen participation, inclusive safety campaigns.
  • Workshops & idea labs: co-creating Austrian approaches aligned with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and SDGs.
  • Networking sessions with mobility professionals, NGOs, local administrations, education, and user groups.
