Commencing on 25 May and running until 31 October 2026, the AccessibleEU Resource Centre offers the 3rd Edition of a free, online course on Introduction to Accessibility of the Built Environment at AccessibleEU’s online campus.
The course is especially suitable for non-specialists who wish to gain an understanding of why accessibility is necessary and how an accessible built environment benefits individuals and society as a whole, considering the diverse needs of all users. Students, as well as practicing architects, planners and designers, can also use this as a “refresher’ course.
In 11 modules, it explains how good design is based on knowing the needs of users with disabilities and others with specific access requirements. It highlights the role of EU legislation in promoting and regulating accessibility of the built environment in the EU member states.
The course also outlines the relevant standards, guidelines and design approaches that support accessibility throughout all stages of the procurement and development process; and provides examples of good practice drawn from the experience of users, architects and planners across different types of buildings and environments.
All the modules are presented in thematic sections with text and illustrations, together with relevant terminology, additional references and suggested videos to enhance the learning experience.
This course is self-paced and has been designed following the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) format. To pass the course and receive the AccessibleEU certificate of completion, students must complete a self-assessment questionnaire.
Learners are able to make comments, share experiences and ask questions in the online classroom forum. This is not mandatory but it is highly recommended.
The estimated study time for the full course is 38 hours.
