Czech Republic introduces new accessibility standards for public transport

Barrier-free travel in the Czech Republic is set to receive a major boost with the introduction of the Catalogue of Requirements and Recommendations for Improving the Accessibility of Public Transport. The document is mainly intended for public service commissioners, transport infrastructure managers, and operators. 

The catalogue has been designed as a methodological tool to support the planning and design of infrastructure projects, the preparation of public service contracts, and the day-to-day management of transport services.It builds on established international standards, including TSI PRM (European Union), Code of Practice (United Kingdom), ADA Standards (United States), ATPDR (Canada) and DSAPT (Australia).

Accessibility at Czech railway stations has been steadily improving in recent years. According to the Railway Administration, 844 stations and stops currently feature step-free accessible platforms. Additional measures are also being implemented to enhance user comfort, including the installation of Eurokey locking systems. These allow people with reduced mobility and other difficulties to independently access sanitary facilities at stations.

By integrating these frameworks, the Czech Republic aims to ensure consistency and quality in accessibility measures while aligning with global norms.
