Digital euro app to incorporate highest accessibility standards

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled accessibility features for the future digital euro app, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive digital payments. The app will apply the highest accessibility standards, exceeding requirements under the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549.

Planned features include enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, simplified language, error prevention, time-out warnings and reduced motion settings. The design has been developed with consumer organisations, accessibility experts and national central banks.

Accessibility and usability testing will begin during the digital euro pilot in 2027, including collaboration with Fundación ONCE and experts from the ECB and national central banks. According to the ECB, the digital euro app aims to ensure all Europeans can access digital payments on equal terms.
