Renewal of the passenger train fleet of Croatia’s sole passenger train company (Croatian Railways Passenger Transport Ltd / HŽ Putnički Prijevoz d.o.o.) in the last five years has massively increased the number of low-floor trains that meet the requirements of the railway accessibility standard (PRM TSI - Persons with Disabilities and with Reduced Mobility TSI). After several years of no new fleet improvement, from 2020 to 2024 Croatian Railway Passenger Transport has received 35 new low-floor, PRM TSI compatible trains (2 in 2020, 6 in 2021, 9 in 2022, 14 in 2023 and 4 in 2024). Total of 14 units have been financed by national funding, while 21 units have been co-funded by EU Cohesion Funds.

New low-floor diesel-electric (DMU) and electric (EMU) trains are built by local KONČAR - Electric Vehicles d.o.o. company in Zagreb, Croatia. They have replaced electric and diesel multiple-unit trains and passenger carriages older than 40 years which didn’t meet any of the accessibility requirements. New trains are utilized on most frequent routes and currently form the backbone of regional and commuter passenger traffic in Croatia. Modernization will continue, with additional 15 trains being on order and being delivered in 2025-26, with following 15 trains planned for 2027-28.

Trains enable level-boarding where station platforms have also been upgraded to PRM TSI standards (platform height of 550 mm), include elevator platforms for boarding where platforms are not appropriately upgraded, designated areas onboard for wheelchair users, TSI compatible accessible toilet, improved visual and sound notifications and platform gap fillers on the latest 21 trains.
