In November 2024, Estonia launched the "Kaugtõlke rakendus," a remote sign language interpretation application designed to provide real-time communication assistance for individuals with hearing impairments.

This innovative solution allows users to connect with professional sign language interpreters via video calls, facilitating interactions in various daily scenarios, such as medical appointments, employment discussions, and public service engagements.

The app is accessible on multiple platforms, including smartphones, tablets, and computers, ensuring broad usability. Users authenticate through secure methods like ID cards, Smart-ID, or Mobile-ID, with account verification completed within 72 hours.

The service operates Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering features like emergency prioritization and the ability to share preparatory information with interpreters.

Funded by the European Social Fund and managed by the Estonian Social Insurance Board, this initiative exemplifies the integration of digital technology to promote inclusivity and autonomy for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
