Klaro, a service of the APEMH (Association des Parents d’Enfants Mentalement Handicapés), is Luxembourg's official centre for easy-to-read and accessible communication. It plays a crucial role in making information understandable for people with intellectual disabilities, learning difficulties, or limited literacy skills.
Klaro specialises in translating complex texts into easy-to-read formats, adhering to the principles of FALC (Facile à Lire et à Comprendre) and Leichte Sprache. These formats use simple vocabulary, short sentences, and clear structures to ensure comprehension. For instance, Klaro has collaborated with the Ministry of Digitalisation to simplify administrative content on Guichet.lu, enabling individuals to navigate public services more independently.
To ensure accuracy and relevance, Klaro involves individuals with intellectual disabilities in the validation process. These users review and provide feedback on the materials, ensuring that the final content is truly accessible and meets the needs of the target audience.
Klaro offers training sessions for professionals and institutions, teaching them how to create accessible content using easy-to-read language, pictograms, and other inclusive communication tools. This empowers various organisations to produce materials that are more accessible to everyone.
Klaro collaborates with various entities to enhance public accessibility. For example, it worked with the Ministry of Family Affairs and other organisations to develop accessible election materials, such as tactile voting templates and easy-to-read guides, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can participate in elections independently.
Klaro produces digital content, including videos and guides, to explain various topics in an accessible manner. These resources cover subjects like voting procedures, environmental awareness, and legal concepts, making complex information more understandable.
