Active Inclusive Design (AID) is a Dutch research initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity in design by equipping designers (including with disabilities) with the necessary tools and knowledge to create products and services accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and those from diverse cultural backgrounds. The activity involves a consortium of creative design companies, Universities (of applied sciences), and experts with disabilities.

AID employs a practice-based action research approach within a "learning community" comprising designers, educators, researchers, and individuals with disabilities. This collaborative environment facilitates the sharing of insights and development of inclusive design practices.

The initiative focuses on seven key actions:

  1. Inclusive Attitude: Fostering awareness and commitment among designers to prioritize inclusivity in their work.
  2. Tools, Guidelines, and Case Descriptions: Developing practical resources to assist designers in implementing inclusive design principles effectively.
  3. Professional Collaboration with Individuals with lived experience: Encouraging partnerships between designers and individuals who have firsthand experience to inform and enhance design processes.
  4. Identifying Target Groups: Understanding and defining the diverse user groups to ensure designs meet varied needs.
  5. Maturity for Inclusive Design: Assessing and advancing the readiness of organizations to adopt inclusive design practices.
  6. Education: Integrating inclusive design into educational curricula to prepare future designers with the necessary competencies.
  7. Learning Community: Establishing a sustainable network for ongoing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and support in inclusive design.

Through these actions, AID aims to embed inclusivity into the core of design practices, ensuring that products and services are accessible and beneficial to a diverse population.
