Inclusive festival participation through dedicated accessible camping and services (HandiCamp) - Denmark

Roskilde Festival has, over several decades, developed a strong and evolving approach to accessibility where they ensure that people with disabilities can participate fully in one of Europe’s largest cultural events.

A central element is “HandiCamp”, a dedicated camping and service area designed for festivalgoers with disabilities and their companions. Located close to key festival infrastructure, HandiCamp provides accessible toilets and bathing facilities, electricity access for assistive devices, quiet areas, and trained volunteers offering practical support – as well as the ability to get to the area with a car.

The initiative goes beyond minimum compliance by integrating accessibility into planning, logistics, and communication. Information about accessibility is clearly structured and available online before the event, supporting informed decision-making and independent participation. The festival continuously improves its solutions based on user feedback and collaboration with people with disabilities. This long-term, user-centred approach demonstrates how large-scale temporary events can create inclusive environments that address physical, sensory, and organisational barriers while maintaining a strong community experience.
