In recent years, Bratislava has witnessed a revitalisation of public spaces, including playgrounds. One example of this trend is the playground on Budovateľská Street in Bratislava - Ružinov, which is not only more beautiful and safer, but also more inclusive. Ružinov, as a city district, is one of the major investment actors in the field of public space renewal. In the case of Budovateľská Street, the effort to create a space that will not only be a place to play, but also an inclusive public space where different groups of residents meet, thus supporting social inclusion, has also been fulfilled.
The inclusive playground was officially opened on 13th May 2025.The large playground on Budovateľská Street is a safe space, open to all children, including children with disabilities. This project is not only an example of improving the quality of public spaces, but also of the growing emphasis on inclusivity, sustainability and community-oriented urban design.
The playground is designed, constructed and equipped to be accessible, taking into account the needs of children with various forms of disability. Accessibility is ensured by a combination of water-permeable EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber) surfaces, interlocking paving and landscaped greenery. The presence of several types of surfaces creates the possibility of smooth and safe movement even for children in wheelchairs or with limited mobility and orientation.
The project has incorporated play elements such as an accessible carousel, a raised inclusive sandbox, a swing with a seat for children with physical disabilities, and an accessible trampoline. The playground includes sensory play elements aimed at stimulating various senses, such as interactive educational panels and sound devices. The playground is also designed to serve as a space for community meetings of people of different generations.
A key aspect of the project was the collaboration with specialised institutions and experts. Consultations with the Foundation for Children of Slovakia and other organisations in the field of social inclusion enabled the adaptation of the playground to meet not only legislative but also practical standards of inclusive design. In terms of long-term development, this is a project that goes beyond the playground itself. Its significance lies in the fact that it sets a new standard for the creation of public spaces, especially playgrounds. It considers not only aesthetic and functional parameters, but also social inclusion.
