The initiative “Accessible Museum” of the Regional History Museum – Sofia introduces a multisensory model of museum experience for people with visual impairments through tactile exhibits, audio descriptions, and adapted educational tours. This approach goes beyond physical accessibility and focuses on equal access to cultural content.

The museum organizes specialized visits for people with visual impairments in partnership with the Union of the Blind in Bulgaria. During the tour, tactile models and replicas of exhibits are used, enabling participants to perceive cultural and historical objects through touch, complemented by extended verbal descriptions provided by museum specialists.

The initiative is part of the museum’s broader strategy for social inclusion and accessibility through educational programs and partnerships with organizations of people with disabilities, while also contributing to the development of digital accessibility standards. In this sense, “Accessible Museum” represents a sustainable and easily replicable practice that demonstrates how cultural institutions can ensure equal access to content without requiring significant infrastructural changes.
