The Manual Alphabet – The Path to Reading is a teaching resource that provides students who are deaf or hard of hearing with an alternative and visual pathway into written language through the manual alphabet of Swedish Sign Language.
It supports students’ language development, reading, and writing through systematic work with the manual alphabet of Swedish Sign Language. It is based on research showing a strong connection between fingerspelling and reading ability. By working in a structured way with finger spelling, pupils are provided with a visual pathway into written language.
The teaching resource is bilingual, using Swedish Sign Language and written Swedish, and has been developed for students in Preschool through Year three in the Swedish school system. It can also be used in special schools and adapted primary schools.
