Rehabilitation for persons with visual impairment at Margit Slachta Institute for National Social Policy - Hungary

The elementary rehabilitation activity is a complex process that provides services that help people with visual impairments (blind and partially sighted) for the independent life and teaches related knowledge. Its purpose is to promote occupational rehabilitation, support integration and reintegration into society, and overcome difficulties arising from a changed life situation.

The service is free for all visually impaired Hungarian citizens over the age of 16. The assistance is available either in the rehabilitation center or in the form of home tutoring.
The service consist on:

  • Functional vision test and vision training (selection of optical aids, learning how to use them).
  • Teaching orientation and transportation (e.g. with white stick).
  • Everyday activities (personal hygiene, relearning how to use the kitchen and household tasks, money recognition, organization).
  • Tactile reading and writing (Braille).
  • Information technology education (computer and smartphone - user knowledge, use of available software, applications).
  • Social work (finding available benefits, lifestyle counseling).
  • Psychological counseling (processing challenges related to visual impairment).
    Rental of assistive devices.
