Revelland – transforming arts into immersive and inclusive experiences

Inclusion and accessibility are hot topics in the live music sector today. How can music art be accessible for people with disabilities?

The answers are searched by a collective network of artists and music lovers – musicians, music experts, events’ organizers, people with hearing and intellectual disabilities, supporting specialists - participants in the NEW REV Revelland project - transforming arts into immersive and inclusive experiences from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The project is leaded by Possibilize, Netherlands and works together with the partners: Disability Studies, Maria’s World Foundation, EASPD, Vitamin, CWB Productions, KeepON Live, Live DMA.

The multisensory presentation of musical events is addressed, so that it engages all the senses of the audience. The model is the multisensory music rock festival Sensity in Utrecht, mainly oriented towards the deaf people. In addition, a group of people with intellectual disabilities took part in this project.

Young people with intellectual disabilities from Maria’s World Foundation had the amazing opportunity to participate in unique, multi-layered, multi-national process related to their inclusion through music. They took part in the music inclusion council aimed at discussing the topics of music and accessibility of music events.

Bulgarian young people participated in the creation of accessibility assessment tool, which measures the level of accessibility of music performances of music band. The tool was an online survey consisting of images and questions adapted in easy to read format. The project partners evaluated six musical groups and their performances.

The young people also participated in the multi-sensorial immersive music festival SenCity 2023 in Ultrecht, the Netherlands. The travelling and their participation in the event was a huge highlight for them as they expressed it: “it was amazing and super exciting to be part of something so big, designed with the idea of inclusion”. Some of the participants were part in such a big international art event for the first time.
