We cannot imagine everyday life without constant decision-making. What and when to eat, what to wear, where and with whom to live, what profession to choose. It is difficult to understand that the right to make everyday decisions could be taken away, but the reality of some people with intellectual disabilities in Lithuania is exactly that – it was decided for them.

Decision support is a personal, long-term service. It focuses on recognizing the needs and desires of a person with a disability and encouraging him or her to express his or her will. Together with a decision support specialist, one learns to overcome difficulties related to the perception of information that is necessary and important in everyday life. After becoming familiar with the person’s capabilities, information is individually adapted and presented in the most accessible way possible: in easy-to-understand language, with pictures and other formats. One learns not only to make a decision, but also to understand the possible consequences and responsibilities. The decision support service is designed to strengthen a person’s independence, promote involvement in community life, and provide assistance that is needed in preventing legal capacity limitations.

In order to present the service provided by the state – help in making decisions – a social campaign is being presented that changes the attitude towards intellectual disability.

The opportunity to choose is not a privilege, but a right that belongs to everyone. This initiative is a joint work of people with intellectual disabilities, the "authors" of the creative agency autoriai  and artists, which was initiated by the Agency for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour.
