In 2024, the city of Tartu enhanced its commitment to inclusive public spaces by developing an accessible outdoor gym in Tähtvere Sports Park, complemented by detailed navigation instructions tailored for individuals with visual impairments. The gym features equipment designed for universal use, ensuring that people of varying abilities can engage in physical activity.
To facilitate independent access, the city provided comprehensive route descriptions from the "Laululava" bus stop to the gym and onward to accessible restrooms. These instructions detail the terrain, gradients, and landmarks, enabling users to navigate safely and confidently.
The outdoor gym includes tactile and Braille information boards next to the fitness equipment, making it possible for blind and partially sighted users to independently access exercise instructions.
Step-free access throughout the gym area ensures smooth movement for wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments. Additionally, audio-described workout instructions are available via QR codes installed at each equipment station, offering an accessible and autonomous exercise experience.
The initiative exemplifies how urban planning can integrate physical fitness opportunities with thoughtful accessibility measures, promoting health, independence, and active lifestyles for all residents.
