Talking Hands is an innovative assistive device designed to improve the independence and daily experiences of individuals who are visually impaired or have autism. Utilizing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, Talking Hands NFC offers vocal feedback when an NFC tag is scanned, providing critical information about the environment or specific objects. This versatile technology supports various settings, including helping persons with visual impairment navigate their surroundings and assisting children with autism in their learning and communication. It uses NFC tags that can be placed on objects or within environments. When a user passes their hand over these tags, the device provides audio feedback describing the item or location. This allows visually impaired individuals to better understand and interact with their surroundings, whether at home, in the workplace or in public spaces. The device offers an intuitive and reliable way to identify objects and navigate environments, enhancing the user's independence and confidence.

Talking Hands Plus is an innovative multimedia communication device designed to assist individuals with speech and communication challenges. By utilizing advanced technology, this device translates hand gestures into verbal communication, allowing users to interact more effectively with others. Through the recognition and interpretation of hand movements, Talking Hands Plus converts gestures into audible speech or text, offering a seamless and intuitive communication experience. Equipped with sensors and software that detect a wide range of hand gestures, Talking Hands Plus processes these movements and translates them into corresponding verbal expressions or written text. It provides a valuable tool for individuals with verbal impairments, supporting both functional communication and social inclusion.
The developer Limix, a spin-off of the University of Camerino, is committed to improving people’s lives by transforming the results of scientific research into innovative technologies in order to foster empowerment of people with speech disabilities and promote their inclusion. Talking Hands has been developed by an experienced research group, with the support of the Department of Mathematics and Applications of UniCam and other Italian companies with expertise in developing medical applications, such as MES Spa.
Talking Hands has received a first grant to scale up the project through StartCup Marche and Ecapital, while in 2016 it won the R.O.M.E. Prize (Rome Outstanding Maker of Europe), assigned by an international jury for the best project presented. In addition, LiMiX was Italian winner of the Chivas Venture, a competition that rewards the most innovative and impactful startups in the social sector.
The device has been tested by many students from ISISS, the Higher Institute for the Deaf in Rome. Furthermore, another collaboration was established with the Association of Parents of Nonverbal Autistic Children. As such, Talking Hands devices are used by some autistic children to continue clinical research on the device’s effects in supporting Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
The outcomes of testing activities have also been published in a series o scientific papers.
