In August and September 2024, a user-centered pilot test of the NaviLens solution was conducted at Tallinn Zoo to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing orientation and information access for people with visual impairments.

NaviLens is a mobile application that uses the smartphone camera to detect special visual codes—similar to QR codes—which provide audio-based wayfinding and detailed information in real time.

The codes were placed along a designated route through the zoo, from the west gate to the rainforest exhibit and back. Sixteen participants, including blind, low-vision, and elderly individuals with varied levels of smartphone experience, tested the system in four different groups.

The app enabled participants to receive contextual information at both long and short ranges, thanks to audio cues and layered descriptions. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with users praising the clarity, accessibility, and intuitive navigation support. NaviLens also impressed mobility instructors, who noted its usefulness in both urban and complex environments.

The solution increases user independence, potentially reducing the need for sighted guides in tourist locations and giving blind users the ability to lead or describe their environment to others. The test highlighted key areas for improvement and provided insight into user behavior and app design. The initiative stands as a strong example of inclusive digital innovation in public space accessibility.
