‘Rail Baltica’ is a new railway infrastructure project integrating the Baltic States into the European rail network. It will not only use the latest multimodal passenger terminal solutions at railway stations, which will conveniently connect various inner, regional, and long-distance transport services, but will also provide parking spaces for cars and bicycles and install recreation and shopping areas. Within the ‘Rail Baltica’ framework, the Riga Central Station is being rebuilt.
Riga Central Station is an important point of the transport network. It is located close to the Riga International Bus Station, Riga Central Market, and the Daugava River, along which excursion boats take tourists, and also to the Old Town.
Along with the reconstruction of the Central Station, the environment is also being improved. Guide (control) lines are embedded in the sidewalks so that visually impaired people can move freely. At street intersections, pedestrian zones are built on the same level, providing an opportunity for persons with mobility difficulties to cross the streets easily. A special concrete pavement with relief has been built in the areas of intersections. Recreation areas have been created for pedestrians who need rest.
