Inclusive Play spaces In South Dublin County Council

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) in Ireland take a universal design approach to playground provision where they consider disability to be part of everyday life. They build playgrounds and playspaces in the assumption that they are places for everyone to play together. This contrasts to special needs provision such as wheelchair only swings which must be fenced off from other children and where the play happens separately. The guidance gives both practical and real life solutions that have been implemented by SDCC.

SDCC were also awarded as part of the European Access city Awards for 2024 with a special mention for landscape and playground areas, recognising their commitment to ensuring play areas have varied landscapes incorporating natural elements, while ensuring they are accessible. Key to winning the award was the process of engagement with a diverse range of users and in particular children with disabilities.

This is a great example of how working closely with the users of public spaces through the whole process that better solutions can be achieved with little or no extra cost. It also demonstrates the passion and attitude of the SDCC staff on ensuring universal design was at the core of their thinking as clearly demonstrated in the guidance document.
