AccessibleEU Austria - Accessibility has failed: Try Generative UI = Individualized UX (24-WS-AT-01)

This AccessibleEU session, organised within the ICCHP conference, will address the deflating summary by Jacob Nielsen: "Accessibility has failed: Try Generative UI = Individualized UX” has been.

Starting with a keynote from Kevin White, W3C/WAI and followed by a panel of distinguished and experienced accessibility experts from leading IT companies will discuss achievements, progress and challenges of digital accessibility to provide evidence for the provoking discussion. As a sector, accessibility pretends to outline that much more has been reached in terms of guidelines, standards, legislation, techniques and tools.

All major platforms include and support accessibility as an indispensable aspect for reaching all customers and clients and to leave nobody behind. A broad and growing set of Assistive Technologies (AT) are at hand exploiting accessibility features and many AT functionalities have entered mainstream platforms and applications allowing accessible user experience and supporting usability for many beyond disabled and older people. Much has been reached, often not visible and recognised as an outcome of accessibility R&D.

But yes, the sector takes the critical remarks seriously. We need more and faster uptake. This panel will discuss and try to outline:

  • Evidence about technical accessibility progress and challenges.
  • Challenges for the “last mile” in implementing accessible user experiences based on platform and IDE support.
  • The potential of AI as “the magic hand” solving all accessibility issues and the danger of provoking another and even stronger ableism.
  • Demands for academia, R&D and other all other stakeholder groups aiming at digital accessibility to facilitate a more open, democratic and inclusive society.
