Bus stop by-passes have been rolled out in a number of jurisdictions as a way of incorporating more cycling friendly infrastructure into the built environment. However, the design of these bus stops creates a necessity for pedestrians to cross the cycle track in order to access the bus stop. This is creating a shared space between pedestrians and cyclists and raises significant safety concerns for pedestrians, particularly disabled people, older people and children who may not be able to assess all risks and may need more time to cross.
This workshop looks to examine the issues with this kind of design, explore lived experience with shared space and crossings of this kind, detail possible solutions, and research in the area which may help improve safety.
