With the support of AccessibleEU, volunteers were trained at the beginning of 2024 to evaluate cultural and historical objects throughout Latvia, and on 5 November, a forum titled 'Accessibility of Cultural and Historical Objects in Latvia - Myths and Reality' was held in Riga. It was organised by the Association of Disabled Persons and their Friends 'Apeirons', the National Cultural Heritage Administration, the Riga City Council, and AccessibleEU. The forum provided an opportunity to discuss challenges and solutions related to improving the accessibility of cultural and historical buildings.

At the forum's opening, volunteers spoke about surveying various architectural objects of national importance. A total of 180 architectural sites were surveyed, and it was concluded that 24 objects were accessible, 44 were partially accessible, and 108 were inaccessible. 

The participants, including architects and designers, stressed the need for cross-sectoral cooperation. Particular attention was also paid to certain aspects of external and internal accessibility, such as clarity of external guidance and compliance with security requirements. The results of the discussion will serve as a basis for further improvements so that more historical objects become accessible to everyone.

The event ended with an awards ceremony for cultural and historical objects that display innovative accessibility solutions.

Digital Guide on the accessibility of cultural and historical sites

Data on available and partially accessible sites are collected and included in the Digital Guide Mapeirons.EU. The recently updated website serves as an essential resource for information about accessible objects both in Latvia and elsewhere and earned the recognition of the forum participants. This digital guide makes it quick and easy to find up-to-date information, helping persons with disabilities plan their visits and enjoy their cultural heritage.
