In this course, students will learn about the principles of design for all, common barriers and how to solve them, the social economic benefits as well as the diversity of users. The course also teaches about accessibility related legislation, procurement, and available accessibility tools.
Students will learn to:
- Understand what an accessible built environment is.
- Learn about the social model of disability.
- Learn about Universal Design and how this relates to the Social Model of Disability.
- Understand why accessibility is necessary and how an accessible built environment benefits individuals and society as a whole.
- Learn about the diversity of users of the built environment.
- Understand the role which EU legislation plays in promoting and regulating accessibility of the built environment in the EU member states.
- Understand the role of standards and guidance documents.
- Learn how accessibility should be integrated throughout all stages of the procurement and development process.
- Learn about accessibility tools that can help achieve an accessible and inclusive built environment.
- Understand the importance of stakeholder engagement in making the built environment accessible.
This course is self-paced and has been designed following the MOOC format. It consists of 9 modules, which are the following:
