Due to the European Accessibility Act, digital accessibility is gaining importance in the business world, including at ANWB—the Netherlands' largest association with 4.6 million members. Erwin Schaapman, product owner of ANWB's digital design system, shares how the organization is addressing this issue.

Initially prompted by legal obligations, ANWB's UX team initiated discussions with peers and realized the need for accessible digital platforms. Recognizing their societal role, they formed an internal working group involving UX designers, developers, content marketers, and legal experts to explore accessibility requirements.

However, raising awareness wasn't enough. Despite initial presentations and team discussions, accessibility efforts stalled due to competing priorities. This led Schaapman and the team to engage ANWB’s management, highlighting both regulatory expectations and reputational risks. Their efforts secured accessibility as a strategic priority, officially making it a 'must do' for all digital teams from 2025 onwards.
