Over the past few years, various municipalities, NGOs, and individuals have contributed to improving the accessibility of playgrounds for children. Several playgrounds have been redesigned to include equipment specifically for children with disabilities, particularly those who use wheelchairs. Notable examples include:
- Nikos Spanos Park & Saint George’s Playground in Lakatamia, Nicosia – The playground in St. George’s Park, located in the Lakatamia Amphitheatre, was upgraded in 2021, to ensure accessibility for children with mobility impairments. A similar initiative was completed in Nikos Spanos Park, where an inclusive playground was installed.
- The Park of Love and Equal Opportunities in Geri, Nicosia – Seven different play structures were installed to accommodate children with mobility impairments. The park was inaugurated in 2022.
- Spyros Kyprianou Park in Aglantzia, Nicosia – As part of the "Swings of Love / No Child Without a Toy" campaign, organized by the Municipality of Aglantzia and the Pancyprian Association "Little Volunteers," inclusive play equipment was introduced for children with disabilities at the park in 2023.
- Demetris Christofias Park in Lakatamia, Nicosia – Accessible table games, such as table tennis, were installed for both children and adults with disabilities, all tested and certified according to EU standards. This park was inaugurated in 2024 as part of the decision of the Lakatamia Municipality’s city council.
These initiatives mark significant progress in fostering inclusive play environments, ensuring that all children, regardless of mobility challenges, can enjoy and benefit from public recreational spaces.
