Jurmala is the largest resort town on the shores of the Baltic Sea. It has a convenient geographical location and a 24-kilometer-long beach just 25 km from the capital, Riga. Jurmala remains Latvia's second most popular destination among local and foreign tourists.
The city stretches along the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe River, and for a long time during the summer, it has become a favorite place for people to relax. The beach in the Gulf of Riga is covered with fine white quartz sand. The sand cover from the water line to the dune wall in the middle part of the city forms an area up to 25 to 50 meters wide. The coastal dune separating the beach from the forest belt runs parallel to the coast, rising to 17 m above sea level and thus protecting the resort from the winds. Wooden boardwalks, installed in the spring but removed in the autumn, lead to the beach.
During the bathing season, from May 15 to September 15, 13 official bathing places are available for recreation by the water, of which 11 are near the sea and two - on the bank of the Lielupe River. Every year, the city council landscapes the beach and makes sure that the beach is also accessible to wheelchair users. In the 2024 season, out of 54 exits to the sea, 14 exits are adapted for wheelchair users. There are expanded, more comfortable changing booths in four places – in Vaivari, Kauguri, Jaunķemeri and Jaundubulti (separate parts of Jurmala city). Since June, swimming wheels have been available for people with reduced mobility to relax on the beach and for people with various functional or balance issues – tandem wheels and tricycles. If movements are minimal, special wheeled swings can be used to relax on the beach.
