The City of Cascais has partnered with 12 NGOs in the community to identify and evaluate people's housing accessibility needs. This groundbreaking program is one of the first of its kind in Portugal, and it is a model for other cities that are looking to improve housing accessibility for people with disabilities.
Through the program, Cascaisaims hundreds of people with disabilities who have accessibility needs in their homes. The city then works with the NGOs to assess each person's individual needs and develop a plan for making their home more accessible. This may involve modifications such as installing ramps, widening doorways, or adding grab bars in the bathroom.
Cascais covers part of the cost of the modifications, based on an economic assessment. People who are interested in applying for the program can do so through a form on the Cascais website. Applications are open all year round.
The Cascais Social Workshop Program is a valuable resource for people with disabilities who need to make their homes more accessible. The program has supported several people who struggled to adapt their houses due to financial issues or lack of knowledge about how to adapt or what to adapt.
