Description

Editorial Information: CYLAW The Cyprus Legal Information Source.

Sign Language is recognised as an official language by the Recognition of Cyprus Sign Language Law of 2006 (N. 66 (I) / 2006). This status is not currently reflected in other relevant (disability) laws, but it is recognised in the benefits provision policies of the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities for the criteria of funding for Sign Language Interpreters.

The standardization and recognition of the Cyprus Sign Language was a coordinated collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the School for the Deaf and the Cyprus Federation of the Deaf.

The Law includes measures for adopting the CSL as an official SL, involving SL interpreters services, SL learning manuals, appointment of SL teachers at the School for the Deaf and inclusion of CSL as an elective course in public schools.
