On-demand Ride pooling is a digitally controlled mobility service, it pools trips from people who are traveling in roughly the same direction. By allowing many people to share a vehicle, ride pooling helps cities transition to a modern transport system.

The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) calculates: “380,000 on-demand buses would be enough to replace all second and third cars in Germany – around 12 million cars.” MOIA is a Volkswagen-owned company and offers ride pooling in Hamburg and Hannover. The 450 MOIA vehicles in Hamburg are all electric. They are minibuses with six seats. Ride pooling works a bit like shared taxis. The only difference is that there are no fixed timetables, routes, or stops. These are calculated digitally by an algorithm based on demand. Each vehicle picks up people at virtual stops who want to travel in roughly the same direction.

The app is usable for people with visual impairments. It can be controlled by voice and screen reader. Since January 2023, the MOIA fleet has also included 15 wheelchair-accessible vehicles. One of the five seats can be folded away, making room for a wheelchair user. Access is via an electro-hydraulic rear lift. The drivers of the wheelchair-accessible minibuses can operate the ramp, securely anchor the wheelchair, and know where best to park.

Because the mobility service is now officially part of public transport, people with a severely disabled person's ID card can also use MOIA free of charge. To do so, they must register in person with their documents once.
