In February 2025, the play ‘Light, I Hear You’ premiered at the Latvian Puppet Theatre. The play was created in collaboration with students and teaching staff of the Textile Art, Interior, Graphics and Design Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, as well as in collaboration with participants of the international DESIGN*ness project ‘Design and Diversity in Higher Education’ – the Latvian Academy of Arts, NABA Milan Academy of Arts and Vilnius Academy of Arts.
The play aims to expand the accessibility of art for people with visual impairments. It is like a kaleidoscope of different senses, through which three young women take the viewer, listener, and tactile into their unseen world - how they see things, events, and relationships beyond their eyes and what they experience when encountering people who do not want to see or even dislike them.
Before the play, producer Elīna Cērpa conducted research sessions with young people with visual impairments to understand the needs of the Latvian youth community with visual impairments for art accessibility.
The performance ‘Light, I Hear You’, with its approach through touch, adds to the development of theatrical language and is a new experience for everyone - both the audience and the visually impaired girls involved in the performance and the entire theatre creative team. The performance’s strong acoustic and tactile dimension makes it especially suitable for an audience with visual impairments.
