Online participation in conferences is a valuable alternative to travelling, especially considering cost, environment, accessibility and time constraints. But online participation from home is not a very social experience, and you miss much of the networking.
AxessLab (an accessibility company) invited people interested in accessibility to remotely follow the Axe Con conference together with them. They provided a venue and some refreshments, so participants could mingle and meet like minded, without having to travel far.
