In Slovenia, persons with disabilities have the opportunity to acquire technical aids and vehicle adaptations to enhance their independent living. Persons with mobility impairments often require specific modifications to their vehicles. These persons, who need additional support to live independently and consequently face frequent discrimination in various life areas—such as in interactions with different bodies and institutions, accessing goods and services, and utilizing public facilities—have the right to claim these aids and adaptations. Such provisions aim to improve their chances for equitable inclusion.
On the Slovenian eGovernment platform persons with disabilities can remotely submit their applications for technical aids and for the adaptation of vehicles. This process allows them more equitable access and inclusion opportunities.
To level the playing field for persons with disabilities, there is financial support available for:
- Technical aids for persons with sensory impairments (such as those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind).
- Vehicle adaptations for persons with mobility impairments who can operate a vehicle themselves, and for those who cannot operate vehicles but for whom vehicle access and safe travel are essential.
These aids or adaptations are generally funded at 85% of the cost, as stipulated by the Regulation on Technical Aids and Vehicle Adaptation (Pravilnik o tehničnih pripomočkih in prilagoditvi vozila). Under special conditions, full funding may be available. Along with the decision, the beneficiary also receives a voucher, which serves as a "payment method." Beneficiaries can purchase the aid or claim the vehicle adaptation from any supplier or provider in Slovenia, but must redeem the voucher within one year of receipt.
